INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACH

This is a lab course and will be a combination of instructor led tutorial assignments and independant projects. Most work should be able to be accomplished in class or in the Commons so it is not necessary to own a copy of Illustrator for home use.

Students with disabilities who believe that they may need accommodations in this class must contact the Disability Resources and Services office (KOM B-109) at 623.935.8935 or 623.935.8928 TTY or ramona.shingler@emcmail.maricopa.edu.

ASSIGNMENTS/PROJECTS

Tutorials will be graded on screen in class after each tutorial is completed. You will submit color print outs of independant projects on high quality color print paper.

There will be group critiques of all projects from the instructors computer in the classroom. After each critique you will have the opportunity to rework your illustrations before printing them for final grading.

Submit your assignments to be graded on the date due, labeled with your name, course and section number on the back. Due dates for assignments are noted on the class schedule

ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION

Punctual attendance is required. Any student who misses more than four classes, may be withdrawn by the instructor. It is essential that you arrive at class on time, as most instructions are given the first fifteen minutes of class. There are activities which only occur in class and there is no way to "make-up" work that was missed.

This course is set up as a graded (A, B,C, etc.) course. This course may be taken as a P/Z or credit/no credit course. If you wish to take it P/Z or credit/no credit, you must inform the instructor on the first day of class. To receive a passing grade you must make a "C" or higher.

STUDENT ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT - IMPORTANT ABILITIES

  1. Communication and Critical Thinking are currently being integrated into a wide variety of Estrella Mountain courses. By integrating these abilities into a variety of courses you benefit twice. You learn course content, and you develop those all important abilities to enhance your success in academic and professional pursuits. Universities and employers look for students who have these abilities. At Estrella Mountain Community College, Communication and Critical Thinking are defined as follows:

COMMUNICATION: A student who effectively communicates:

    • responds to an audience
    • demonstrates a clear sense of purpose
    • organizes information
    • delivers information using appropriate language

CRITICAL THINKING: A student who thinks critically processes, synthesizes, and applies information to solve problems by:

    • identifying the problem
    • developing and implementing strategies
    • evaluating information
    • reaching conclusions
    • responding to the problem

As we proceed through the semester the instructor will indicate which projects offer you the opportunity to enhance your abilities in these two very important areas.
