E-Learning at EMCC
Eighteen members of the Estrella Mountain Community took eight months (November 11, 2001 - June 2, 2002) to conduct a broad investigation into the best practices related to learning with technology.
The Charge Statement from the College’s Senior Leadership stated that the E-Learning Task Force shall, consider all relevant aspects of E-Learning so that EMCC charts the right course in the rapidly expanding world of educational technology.
E-Learning Advisory Committee Charge
The charge of the Estrella Mountain Community College E-Learning Advisory Committee is to promote quality and access to learning and services to students. The committee will work collaboratively to recommend general guidelines, plans, and policies to enhance the development, delivery, management, and assessment of E-Learning courses and programs offered by EMCC.
The role of the committee is to work with existing administrative and academic units and committees to address issues and concerns related to all aspects of E-Learning. The committee will work with the College community to develop a planning process and a strategic plan. The purpose of the plan is to foster greater communication, cooperation, commitment of resources, and consensus related to E-Learning courses and programs.
The E-Learning program vision, definition and goals were reaffirmed at the spring 08 Faculty Focus Group. Minor changes to the definition are recommended below:
E-Learning at Estrella Mountain is an electronically supported instructional process that creates, fosters, delivers, facilitates and assesses student learning anytime and anywhere.
In Fall 2010 the E-Learning Advisory Committee reaffirmed the guiding principles established for course development by the E-Learning Task Force in 2001/2002.
E-Learning Course Development Guiding Principles
- Given the economic climate, identify strategically where we are, and how to best utilize institution resources.
- Supports degree and/or certificate completion.
- Supports AGEC course development.
- Supports innovative, new, and/or emerging specialized programs.
- Other: examples include consideration such as faculty/space issues, inability to hire adjuncts, etc...
The purpose of the Learning Outcomes Assessment process document is to promote continued excellence in teaching and learning by assessing the effectiveness of instruction and services and determining the scope of competence for the student learning outcome(s) (abilities).
Expanding Our Community with Blended Learning Programs
Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) was awarded $250,000 from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to establish a Localness Blended Learning project. This project, Expanding Our Community, will significantly change the college and its relationship to the region by increasing access for our Local Segment (approximately 75% of our student body; those who are part-time and have family and/or work obligations). These students will have increased access to the Speech Language Pathology Assistant, Teacher Education, and the Associate degree programs and reduced time to degree award. Leveraging these funds with extensive college resources, EMCC faculty will redesign three associate degree programs, a total of thirty three courses, and offer them in a coordinated combination of online, face-to-face, and blended courses, forming a comprehensive Local Segment initiative.
