The ACE Summer Academies/Classes - 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th grade students

ACE Math Science Scholars - High School students

The Junior ACE Summer Academies

The ACE Summer Academy is a week long academy for  6th  7th  8th grade students who are interested in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

Participants will research what currently is known about Mars, gather and analyze data, design a scientific research plan, and propose a space mission. Students will make oral presentations describing their research and will present their findings during the final day of the Academy, where parents, family, faculty, and community members will be invited to participate.

Academies/Class Dates: ACE Mars Academy                       June 8th-11th, 2009
ACE Physics 299                            June 8th-July 2nd, 2009
ACE Lego Robotics Academy       June 1st-July 2nd, 2009

ACE Mars Academy  (Students entering 6th grade in August 2009)
The students are placed in groups of 4 or 5 according to the topics. As a group, the students research the topic and conclude the project by making a PowerPoint and display board. During the 4 days of the academy students are exposed to many hands on activities that enhance their knowledge in science, and peak their interest to continue their education to a higher level. The final projects are presented on the night of closing ceremony, where family and friends are invited to attend.

ACE Physics 299 (Students entering 7th & 8th grade in August 2009)
During 5 weeks students are placed in the 3 credits classes and are given different learning skills on basic Math and Physics that govern the design and flight of rockets. Students are looking for many different kinds of rockets. Students work at their own level of interest. The flight of the rocket involves the interaction of forces, aerodynamics, to working with rocket toy. After 5 weeks of attending all the summer classes, students will need to attend workshop session over the fall 2009 semester. One rocket is design for each team and is judged according to grams, measure, keeping an egg in place.

ACE Lego Robotics Academy (Students entering 9th & 10th grade in August 2009)
During the 5 weeks of the academy students are placed in teams, and are given different Lego robotics projects. The academy provides solutions that allow children to learn and play. We use the motivational effects of robotics to excite student about science and technology. Student will be introduced or reinforce the following applied physics and mathematics concepts: ratios; diameter, radius, and circumference, friction, measurement of distance, time, angles, and speed; light and the electromagnetic spectrum; basic electricity and circuits. At the same time students will be engaged in design activities that challenge them to develop their own original solution for each problem presented. Students will be encouraged to work together and exchange roles. The students will be immersed in activities that required them to effectively manage time and materials to complete the project in a timely manner. At the end of the academy, the teams will have a competition and showcase their projects.
