Beta Alpha XI Chapterof Phi Theta Kappa Phi Theta Kappa, International Honor Society of the Two-Year College, is committed to promoting scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship among talented community college students. Beta Alpha Xi, the Estrella Mountain Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, has achieved an outstanding Five Star Ranking since forming in 1995 and for the last three years has achieved ranking as one of the Top 100 chapters in the entire 1250+ chapter Phi Theta Kappa organization. The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship among community and technical junior college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence. The Beta Alpha XI chapter of Phi Theta Kappa offers membership invitations to students who have achieved a minimum 3.25 GPA, completed twelve (12) college level credit hours, and are in good standing with Estrella Mountain Community college. Those who accept membership are encouraged to participate fully through the chapter development program, which focuses on the four hallmarks - scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship. Beta Alpha Xi does not receive a budget from EMCC and must be self-supportive through membership fees and group fundraising. As a consequence, candidates for membership must pay a one-time $75 membership fee. Once members, students may take part in chapter activities and travel at no additional out-of-pocket expense. Of the $75, $25 stays locally and the remainder goes to support Arizona Region and International activities. Please contact the Chapter Advisor if the fee payment presents a financial burden. Other options can be discussed confidentially. Chapter membership meetings are held twice monthly during the fall and spring semesters. Summer meetings are not routinely held. Chapter membership meetings are held in the Komatke A Plaza Gallery. The following chapter meetings are scheduled for Spring 2010: Fridays from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Jan 29; Feb 12, 26; Mar 5, 12, 26; Apr 2, 16, 30; and May 4 New Member Orientation meetings are scheduled in the Komatke A Plaza Gallery on the following dates and times. Meetings last up to 1 hour will present the benefits of Phi Theta Kappa membership and the process of applying for membership. Time will be available for individual questions. 2/17 Wed 12noon Members are encouraged to attend to learn what programs and service activities are scheduled and available to chapter members. Meetings last approximately one hour each, and students may drop in as their schedules permit. Competitiveness for scholarships and university transfer frequently requires that students be actively involved in campus and community organizations. Phi Theta Kappa can provide opportunities for involvement that may result in significant rewards for those who take part. Those interested in membership are also welcome to attend chapter meetings and see firsthand the benefits of Phi Theta Kappa membership. New member invitations are extended each fall and spring semester from the Office of EMCC College President Dr. Ernie Lara. Spring invitations are expected to be mailed out to eligible students by Feb 8. New Member Orientation Meetings will run Feb 15-Mar 31 and will be detailed in the letter of invitation. Induction of new members is scheduled for Friday evening, April 2, 2010.
