The lights dim, the music grows louder and four cinema-style projection screens jump to life as students and faculty embark on an interactive educational journey. Their point of departure the Center for Teaching and Learning at Estrella Mountain Community College, one of the most innovative technology-based learning environments in the country.
The key to the new center is its flexibility. Built with students and teachers in mind, the center is a totally adaptable open plan classroom, learning and multimedia environment. The center's design allows facilitators to tap into a multitude of resources that stimulate and enhance the learning experience.
The center's physical environment was designed to accommodate the changing needs in education. Every component of the Center for Teaching and Learning was evaluated with an eye to the future, creating a work environment where the boundaries are flexible. The facility houses furnishings built to be moved and reconfigured, providing an environment that encourages collaborative learning. New workstations and support pieces can be added and others removed as the college's technology and learning environment needs change. Chairs that adjust to fit virtually any body type provide exceptional comfort during extended work sessions.
Estrella Mountain's Center for Teaching and Learning is also the site of the Phoenix's first "skywall". And as one watches the solid, soundproof panel drop from the ceiling, dividing the facility into two separate fully-equipped rooms, it is obvious that this is no ordinary place, the "Classroom of the Future" can even replicate itself with one touch of a button.
