Spanish Medical Interpreter Program and Allied Health Care Externships

Karee has worked in the Allied Health Care field for 13 years, and she began teaching in the Allied Health Programs at the SouthWest Skill center at Estrella Mountain Community College in Avondale, Arizona in 2003. Later, she was promoted to manage the Allied Health Programs and externships for Medical Assistant, Medical Interpreter, EMT, and Phlebotomy.
Karee developed the SWSC’s Spanish Medical Interpreter Program which initiated in 2008. Currently, the program exceeds the Interpreter training standards per the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care. This program is nationally recognized by the International Medical Interpreter’s Association as an approved training facility, and it is the only interpreter training program in Maricopa County to offer an academic certificate of completion that articulates to 12 credits within the Maricopa district.
Karee recently established the SWSC as the only site in Arizona to proctor the oral certification exam (CHI) through the Certificate Commission for Healthcare Interpreters making certification more accessible for students and the community. All monies generated from administering these exams go into a student scholarship fund.
Karee strongly promotes the EMCC service strategy statement "Your success is our success," and enjoys working with students ensuring their learning experiences are meaningful, while doing her best to serve them and the community partners we work with-ultimately supporting student's training and preparation for their externships and employment.
