Mission Statement
This conference is designed to promote the core values of the institution. One such value is to promote an ongoing exchange of ideas. This conference
does so by giving students a forum to present academic work on a variety of topics, and allowing a select body of student the opportunity to create the theme of the conference.
Call for Papers
All Student Conference Proposal Applications due by 5pm, February 29, 2008
This conference welcomes papers on the topic of “Pop Culture in Society” by any Maricopa County Community College District student to be presented on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Estrella Mountain Community College. Submissions are invited from all aspects of the topic “Pop Culture in Society.” Suitable topics include by are no limited to:
- Media (images of women, Simpsons, YouTube, political ads)
- TV (reality television, soaps, body image)
- Film (indie film, female hero, Bollywood, anime)
- Clothing (importance of labels, fads vs. fashion, Project Runway, What Not to Wear)
- Sports (Xtreme sports, women in sports, underground sports, steroid use)
- Music (culture jamming, video vixens, genre [i.e. rap or country])
- Fads or Trends (pogs, Magic: The Gathering, Guitar Hero, illegal street racing)
- Subcultures (Emo, Hell’s Angels, vampire)
- Family (family in 21st century, “American Dream,” gender roles, multicultural families)
Submissions
Presenters are required to submit a Student Conference Proposal Application no later than 5pm February 29, 2008. Applications must be filled out completely and according to the instructions to be considered. Presentation formats may include but not limited to: paper presentation, round table, or poster/workshop presentation.
