Building a System to Track Student Success
Estella Mountain is quickly becoming known for its numerous programs designed to increase student success and goal achievement. A few examples of these programs include EMCC NASA Center K-12 Outreach, Summer Bridge Programs, CSEMS Scholarship Mentor programs, and Inspire.teach university transfer programs. So, are programs like these effective and worth the investment?
There are common questions that need to be answered to determine the success of the programs.
- Are Estrella Mountain K-12 outreach programs resulting in more students attending college down the road?
- Are students that participate in summer bridge programs more successful than those that don’t?
- Do the majority of students that participate in college 2+2 programs (i.e. Inspire.Teach) transfer to the partner university and complete a degree?
- What effect do mentorship programs have on student success in terms of goal achievement, university transfer success and ultimately job placement?
- Does participation in campus success activities such as early alert, orientations, and career workshops have any
effect on student goal attainment?
Thanks to the outstanding teamwork and collaboration among the Estrella Mountain Community College
members including: the Information Technology Department, the NASA Center for Success in Math and Science, and the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness.
The results of their efforts have helped to implement a Student Cohort Tracking System to answer questions
related to student outreach, participation, and success.
“Our goal is to track students from their first outreach experience in elementary school through the completion of their community college and university degrees…”
-- Maria Reyes, NASA Center Director.

Early Alert: One Ingredient for Student Success
a Campus Should Not Be Without!
EMCC and the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness
(OPIE) implemented a web enhanced early alert system.
The Student Success
Coordinator and faculty collaborated in creating the Early Alert online system.
This on-line tool allows faculty and staff instant reporting
capabilities for identifying students
who may be in danger of failing. The online system helped increase
faculty participation and improve the intervention strategies with
contacted students. The system aids the reporting process regarding
student behavior and academic progress. The Early Alert academic
support system can be easily routed to the appropriate resource i.e. counseling,
financial aid or tutoring.
Through intervention, students are quickly put back on track and
on with their career endeavors. One can access the EMCC Early Alert
form through the following link:
