Every summer Estrella Mountain partners with a local arts organization, the West Valley Arts Council to host a job education and training program for West Valley youth. Teens, age 15-18, spend 6-weeks on campus creating a public art project that is placed within the West Valley region. The students encounter real life situations in working with their clients and collaborate with city planners, engineers, architects, design artists and local businesses. These apprentices earn dollars and college credit as many learn for the first time about the career opportunities open to them as creative artists.

NASA Summer Academies

The NASA Center for Success in Math & Science at Estrella Mountain Community College offers two hands on summer academies for students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The Mars Academy, June 12-15, 2006 and Building Structures Summer Academy, June 19-22, 2006 give the participants the opportunity to research what is currently known about Mars/Bridges, gather and analyze data, design a scientific research plan, and propose a space mission/assemble and test bridges.  Students make oral presentations describing their research and present their findings at the closing ceremony of each Academy where parents, family, faculty, and community members share in their experience.
