Internet Basics       URLs and Internet Addresses   A URL (or Universal Resource Locator) is the Internet address. It is made up of several parts.

Domain names are used as a convenient way of locating information and reaching others on the Internet. The domain name generally describes the type of entity which produces the Web site. Each domain name has a top-level domain (TLD). The TLD is the portion of the domain name that appears furthest to the right. The top-level domains currently in use on the Internet include:

.com business or commerical site www.ebay.com
.mil military site www.army.mil
.net network www.infoave.net
.org nonprofit organization www.redcross.org
.edu education site www.emc.maricopa.edu
.gov governmental site www.census.gov
.int international site not in USA bbc.co.uk

New top Level Domain Names

.name individual's name - anyone can have one!  
.pro For professionals - accountants, doctors, and lawyers  
.biz .biz is restricted for business  
.info information service - anyone can have .info  
.aero air transportation/airline industry  
.coop cooperative or cooperative service organization  
.museum museums, archival institutions, and exhibitions.  

Country Codes        Different countries are identified by country codes. If there is not one designated - it is assumed that it is the United States although   .us   is being used. Here are some examples:

.au - Australia .fr - France .uk - United Kingdom For a complete list: Country Codes
