January 15, 2009 Estrella Mountain Community College Welcomes Title V Program Director Jonathan Robles Joins EMCC to Direct Federal Grant Initiative Avondale, Arizona - January 15, 2009 - Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC), a Maricopa Community College, is pleased to announce the hire of Jonathan Robles, as its new Title V Program Director. Last year, the college was awarded a $2.8 million grant by the United States Department of Education to allow the college to continue to provide educational opportunities for all students, as well as to become a Learning College, defined by the League for Innovation. Robles will be responsible for the management of grant operations while following federal guidelines. He will implement and monitor program goals, develop strategies to institutionalize learning program goals, advocate learning community and new instructional curricula, and evaluate the program. Robles has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Public Health in Health Administration and Policy, both from the University of Arizona. His professional experience includes eight years as an Associate Director and Director of the Office of Outreach and Multicultural Affairs at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. He was also Director of the Arizona Hispanic Center of Excellence, where he directed a Title VII healthcare workforce and education development program to increase the number of Latino medical students, physicians, and medical school faculty. He has been awarded more than $2 million through grant writing and fundraising efforts as well as having received numerous awards such as the 2007 Faculty/Administrator Service Award through the Western Region Latino Medical Student Association. "Estrella Mountain is very enthusiastic about student learning, and this position gives me the same enthusiasm in being able to improve the learning of our students and help them achieve their academic and career goals," said Robles. "The Title V grant will provide more resources to assist the campus in the Learning College initiative and will engage the campus community in finding different approaches to teaching and learning." Estrella Mountain Community College is located on Thomas and Dysart Roads in Avondale and offers transfer-ready academic courses and job-specific occupational training to approximately 13,000 students annually.
