Recent Student Successes at EMCC

Maricopa Artists of Promise, Phi Theta Kappa

Avondale, Arizona - April 21, 2009

Six Maricopa Artists of Promise Named at EMCC
The Maricopa Community College District names "Maricopa Artists of Promise" each year, highlighting the exceptional artistry of community college students. Students are chosen based on their works in several different art forms including, visual art, choreography, creative writing, theatre, and music. The Artists of Promise gala performance and exhibition will be hosted at the Herberger Theatre on Thursday, April 30, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., where these students will present their work and be honored publically for their achievement.

This year, six Estrella Mountain Community College students were chosen as part of this honor - Shawn Nelson (photograph), Veronica Cantrell (photograph), Amber Rivera (acrylic painting), Darrel Troxel (watercolor painting), Diane Ulibarri (chalk on silk), and Shannon O'Connor (colored pencil). Shawn Nelson was chosen to participate in a nation-wide competition sponsored by the League for Innovation and will read his artists' statement at the event at the Herberger Theatre on April 30.

EMCC Student Wins International Office with Phi Theta Kappa
Monika Groomes, an EMCC elementary education student, was appointed the new Division IV Vice President for 2009-2010 for the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honors Society at the PTK International Convention in Dallas, Texas last week. Groomes will preside at the International Convention and the International Honors Institute, promoting PTK programs by delivering speeches and workshops at regional meetings and communicating with the chapters located in the International Officer's Division. Groomes was elected by her peers and was eligible because of her exceptional grade point average (GPA) and extensive involvement with PTK at Estrella Mountain Community College. The experience will help her develop her public speaking and leadership skills, and will provide her with a $700 stipend each semester, a laptop computer, a $2,000 scholarship, and an International Officer pearl-accented lapel pin upon successful completion of term in office.

Estrella Mountain Community College is located on Thomas and Dysart Roads in Avondale and offers transfer-ready academic courses and job-specific occupational training to approximately 13,000 students annually. Estrella Mountain is part of the Maricopa County Community College District, one of the largest community college districts in the nation.
