  • Greetings,

As another year draws to a close, the words of a great philosopher and scholar offer an opportunity for reflection: "Not every end is a goal. The end of a melody is not its goal: but nonetheless, had the melody not reached its end it would not have reached its goal either. " In today's fast-paced society, it becomes easy to approach the passage of days as a completion of a task-- a kind of red 'x' that marks a finished period on a calendar, but the end of a year can also offer a chance to reflect not just on the termination of things, but the progress. At Estrella Mountain, December marks the end of a semseter, but it also offers a transition time into the beginning of a new year, and a new semester, with continued opportunities for growth and change. So when this year ends, don't think of the end as a goal. Think instead of all the good things that happened throughout the year, the smaller moments of impact on individuals, all of which contribute to the biggest moments of change, and success. And remember, if you have news, share it.

P.S. Without the aid of Google, can you name the philosopher whose deep thoughts sum up the correlation of endings and goals? Hint: Ironically, he is dead. Be the first to e-mail Nicole DeLeon with the correct answer, and win a prize.

Fall 2006 Semester Brought New Faces to EMCC

The Estrella Mountain family continued to grow this semester with several new faces filling new roles here on the campus. The newest additions to college staff this semester are: Chris Molinar, Groundskeeper, Heriberto Bon, Groundskeeper, Abigail Tarelo, Custodian, Laurel Neilsen, Accounting Assistant, Lisa Vanbendegom, Culinary Arts Lab Technician, Josh Cintron, Administrative Secretary III, and Ruth E. Eaton, M.Ed, Recruiter, SouthWest Skill Center. Some of these faces are not so new-- you may have recognized them in previous roles, but are now here to assist employees and students alike in a new phase of their career at Estrella Mountain. Take an opportunity next semester to get to know these newest additions to the campus.

Estrella Mountain To Host District Student, Faculty Conferences in 2007

Estrella Mountain will once again host both the student and faculty conferences on its campus in Spring 2007. Supported by a variety of campus resources, Dr. Carlotta Abrams and Malik Toms will plan and coordinate the events of next year's faculty and student conferences respectively. The theme of the faculty conference this year will be "Engagement in the Global Community," a timely topic for a world scene that experiences constant change and increased connection through burgeoning technology and other means. The theme of this year's student conference complements this, and will be "Globalization and Personal Identity," and will focus on the reality of globalization and how it affects the development of one's personal identity. Both conferences present an array of opportunities for both student and faculty involvement at many levels. Look for more information regarding calls for papers, and other activities in the months to come.

The Marketing and Public Relations Division launched the youth-based web resource The Hub in 2006, and will continue to make further additions to it to enhance student access and interactivity primarily centered on younger, incoming populations, but useful and open to students of all ages. In the months to come, the site will begin to feature expanded RSS (or news) feeds providing up to date information and news on a range of topics from local news, high school sports, nightlife and science news. The site will also offer students a place to sign up for periodic tours and information nights, as well as links and information concerning bus routes, one of the questions most asked of recruiters visiting local high schools. And what's more-- the site will feature real life student success stories and testimonials that allow potential students an opportunity to hear firsthand just what scholastic and personal opportunities can be found here at Estrella Mountain. The Division would like to personally thank those who have already submitted student names for consideration, including Dr. John Bradley, Dr. Jason Mallory, Arlisa Richardson, Susan Staal, and Carol Stevens.

Do you have news you'd like to share with the college? This online newsletter Your Campus, Your News is truly just that-- your outlet for communicating important news about your students, programs, awards, and events to the campus. Beginning in January, you will receive a call for submissions two weeks prior to the release date of the newsletter. If you would like to submit a story for consideration, please don't hesitate. We are always excited to share great news and useful resources with all Estrella Mountain employees.

    Now You Know...Barbara Flores

Few would guess that Barbara Flores, Administrative Assistant, Facilities and Planning Division, was a very shy student in her years at St. Mary's High School in downtown Phoenix. Now the Glendale native, who will soon graduate from the Hispanic Leadership Institute West, is known as one of the friendliest faces on campus. But here are a few things you may not have known about Barb.

What was your first job as an employee with the Maricopas? "I worked in purchasing as a contracts technician. I liked it there because I got to know people all over the district. We'd get calls from everyone-- all the way up to college presidents."
How did you come to Estrella Mountain? "I enjoyed working at the district, but it was time to move on. I had been there for ten years and I wanted to work at a campus. I used to joke around with Patty Barrington (now Topping) and ask if there were any jobs out there. One day she called and said, were you serious? There is one here! And that was how I decided to apply."
What did you think the first time you came to the campus? "The truth is-- I hardly noticed it, because I was lost! Coming for my interview, Patty told me to look for the building with the arches, and when I got here, there were arches everywhere! I remember it was raining and I parked by Montezuma in the gravel lot. But once I found my way, I came to love the campus. I like that it is small. Reminds me of the small elementary and high school I went to. I like smaller environments because they seem cozy and everyone knows everyone."
What is your favorite movie? "I'm not a big movie buff, but any movie where John Travolta is dancing, I like. One of my favorites is Be Cool."
What is your favorite book? "I'd have to say the Bible. It teaches and inspires you how to live your life-- a good life."
What CD are you secretly ashamed that you own? "I can't think of a CD I'd be ashamed to own because I wouldn't own it-- but I am embarrassed to admit that I sing along with commercials all the time!"
You are involved in the Women's Leadership Group (WLG) Mentorship program. What are your future career goals? "On a career and interest level-- I love interiors, and I love renovation. I want to develop my talents and acquire more skill in that area. Through my time in the Hispanic Leadership Institute West, I got to volunteer on a project for New Life Shelter, redoing a few of the casitas and I enjoyed that. It showed me how much volunteering my time meant to me-- and that is a definite goal for me no matter where my career takes me. I want a chance to mentor others, to give them the kind of guidance when it comes to education and career that I wish I'd had, encouraging others to explore the unknown."
What is something most people at the campus wouldn't know about you? "I'm a grandmother. I have a three year old grandson, Emilio-- but pretty soon I'm going to be a grandmother for a second time too. I am so excited!"
