What to do during a Campus Power Outage

Any time during the workday, the college campus could experience a power outage. Power outages are usually of short duration and can have minimal impact on the campus. However, there is always the chance that a power outage can last for a long period of time.

The college does not maintain auxiliary power units to provide emergency power.  If a power outage occurs in the evening, there are battery operated emergency lights in the hallways and other exit paths. Emergency lights will activate automatically when the power goes off.

If the building you are in has a power outage:

  1. Remain calm
  2. If you are teaching a class, have the students remain seated and stand by for instructions from Public Safety, an Administrator or the intercom system.  Please be patient, notification will not be immediate and could take a few moments.
  3. If you are stuck in an elevator, use the elevator emergency button to notify Public Safety of your situation.
  4. Once you have been instructed by Public Safety or an Administrator to leave the building, please proceed in an orderly manner to the closest evacuation zone or where instructed.

For more information on what to do during an emergency, please review your Quick Reference Guide or the EMCC Emergency Preparedness website.

Two Outstanding EMCC Students Shine

Congratulations to EMCC’s 2011 All-USA Scholarship winners, Justin Decknick and Joshua Hodges. Honored during a special awards luncheon last month, both students placed on the First Team of the All-Arizona Academic Team. As a result, each student was awarded a full two-year tuition waiver to an Arizona public university and an additional $1,000 cash prize for their efforts.  Both Justin and Josh plan to transfer to ASU in fall 2011.

As First Team winners, Justin and Josh will complete for additional scholarship dollars at the national level sponsored by Coca-Cola Foundation, the USA Today newspaper chain, and other corporate contributors. The Estrella Mountain Family wishes them well as they move on to potentially earn even more financial support for their higher education goals.

Internship Opportunities for Students

Estrella Mountain is working hard at helping students get prepared for their future.  What better way for students to gain real work experience that will help to build their resume and set them on a career path than through an internship ?  Currently there are  IT, Help Desk, Social Media, Application Development and Research internship opportunities available to students.  For more information, please contact Landis Elliott at (x58220). In the future, information regarding internship opportunities will be accessible via the college website.
