Student Success Fair

EMCC is hosting a Student Success Fair March 26 & 27, 2013. The event is designed to highlight faculty teaching, connect students to critical dates/timelines, and bring EMCC resources to students.

Residential and adjunct faculty are encouraged to "show off" their teaching by doing one or more of the following:

  • "Highlight" your class. If you are excited about a particular lesson or topic, let EMCC capture the class via video. The CTL will record your lesson/class and create a short video to introduce your teaching and course to students.
  • "Open" your class for a day. Allow students to 'see/experience' your class "in action" during the Fair days. Students can get a preview of your teaching before pre-registering for the next semester.
  • "Meet" students in informal settings. During the Fair, socialize with students during pre-planned events or at "drop in" tables.
  • Get students connected. Announce the Fair dates in class and/or allow a student ambassador to present Fair information in your class. Encourage students to attend the Fair and provide course points/extra credit for attendance (student activity sheets are available.)

EMCC's iConnect program focuses us, as a college and community, to become actively involved with student engagement. Our iConnect "report cards" help us communicate with each other about 1) how we are building relationships and 2) our experiences within EMCC's Learning College:

Maryhelen Rosales (Title V) - "Saw two students questioning pre-registration outside of KOM-A. I took the time to explain it to them and encourage them to do it ... then I talked about Engage Estrella (mentoring program)."

Sandy Maas (Nursing) - "I discussed healthcare administration as a career with a student, who was brought to me by Rebecca Baranwoski."

Eddie Zuleger, Jim Cerven, Jennifer Wong, Terry Meyer (Occ Ed / Information Resources) - "AJS and Library collaboration - 34 AJS textbooks were given to the library to be part of library resources ... which are available to all students."

Olga Tsoudis (Faculty) - "A student was in desperate need of finding an instructor. I walked him to the office and provided paper/pen for him to leave a note."

Terry Newbury (Information Resources) - "I helped a faculty member choose material for his class and then added it to our reserve collection."

Randy Larson (Instructional Computing) - "Needed mentoring as prescribed by Voc Rehab. I am utilizing the skills of a very bright IT student to tutor junior students."

Many projects and division activities occur across campus. To increase employee awareness, the initiatives that have a significant impact are included in Campus Updates.

Regifting for Scholarships

Women's History Month Planning Committee is collecting unwanted/unneeded Holiday gifts. By "regifting", donated items become gift baskets for scholarship drawings during the March 23 Women's Conference. Proceeds from the gift basket drawings go to EMCC scholarships for students. Items can be dropped off at the Student Union with Christina Izaguirre (623.935.8802) or with Maryhelen Rosales in Komatke (x8331).


Efforts are made locally and nationally to increase student success and learning. Sharing our best practices both in the classroom and in daily processes helps us improve our effectiveness and efficiency.

Effective Online PowerPoints

PowerPoint slides are a typical medium for communicating information to a group. However, communicating information online with PowerPoint requires more planning and a concise presentation than in-person delivery method. Typically, script the presentation so that all information online is:

  • Relevant to the important concepts you're trying to convey
  • Primarily visual (very little text presented on screen)
  • Rich with stories, personal examples and/or examples that clarify/amplify important concepts
  • Broken into 2-7 minute recordings, each based around a single concept

  • Recycle unwanted TVs, computers, monitors, printers, batteries, VCRs, fax machines, small appliances, cables, cords, etc. Document destruction & paper shredding is also available. Event is open to students and community residents.

  • Performance Funding
  • The District will present budget and finance information to EMCC. Information on the changes that have occurred financially in recent years and new initiatives (like the Lumina Performance Funding grant awarded to Maricopa) will be presented. All are welcome to attend.

  • Sustainability & Diversity Team Meeting
  • To increase diversity awareness and promote sustainability measures on campus, teams organize events and workshops for the campus and community. All are welcome to attend meetings and events.

  • Engage Estrella Mentoring - Training & Orientation
  • Register to be a mentor/mentee with Engage Estrella Mentoring program. Once registered, employees who are new mentors and students who are new mentees attend training and orientation, respectively. Training/orientation is:

  • One Billion Rising - Table Reservation
  • Crafts and artisan work by EMCC employees will be showcased at the February 14 event. Deadline to reserve a table for the event:
