SPOTLIGHTS

As a Learning College, EMCC promotes learning excellence for both employees and students. Each issue we highlight how we are living the Learning College; learning happens ... Anywhere, Anytime, and Anyplace. Let us know how you are learning and recognizing others' contributions!

Presentations and Publications

Representing the SouthWest Skill Center / Estrella Mountain, Karee Peigne was the guest speaker at Pima Community College's Title VI Access Workshop and festival of Bilingual Careers February 15. The event brought together educational and training institutions and agencies in need of translation and interpretation services. SWSC's Spanish Medical Interpreter program offers an industry-driven interpreter camp, training and national certification.

CATS of the Month

Andy Burch received the Comprehensive Assessment Tracking System (CATS) award for January 2013 for his "Using New Mathmatics Program to Increase Learning", a research project to increase student comprehension of mathematical concepts. Click to learn more about his assessment project.

Susan Malmo, Stace Amabisca, Kathleen Iudicello, and Kelly Loucy received the CATS of the month for February 2013.  Their ENG101 Common Assignment Assessment -- 2012/13 compared the performance of students who placed directly into ENG 101 with students who completed ENG 091 by assessing an ENG 101 common assignment.

ACROSS THE CAMPUS

Many projects and division activities occur across campus. To increase employee awareness, the initiatives that have a significant impact are included in Campus Updates.

Emergency Preparedness Drill

Emergency Preparedness training is an ongoing process at Estrella Mountain. This Spring semester the college will be conducting a live drill Friday, April 12. Employees (faculty and staff) are currently preparing for the drill by attending trainings and becoming more familiar with emergency procedures. The drill will involve local emergency services (Fire Department, Police, and Ambulance/Hospital staff). The drill will also be a learning event for EMCC students, who will be participating in the drill. As the details become finalized, more information will be distributed to campus explaining the drill. Check the Emergency Preparedness webpage, which will also be updated with information.

In any emergency - drill or actual event - follow the procedures as outlined in the campus quick reference guide. (Also available online.)
