Class of 2013 Exceeds Expectations

Estrella Mountain's 2013 commencement ceremony had several noteworthy commendations Friday, May 10:

  • Total number of graduates: 345. Students who walked during the ceremony: 334 (31 more students than during EMCC's 2012 graduation.)
  • More than 3,200 family and friends attended the ceremony, an 8% increase from 2012.
  • The national anthem singer, Sarah Patterson, graduated from both high school (Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center) and EMCC. Her mother, Sherri Patterson, graduated with an Associates in Nursing during commencement. Her father, Dale Patterson,was recognized during the Nursing pinning May 9 and graduated with an Associates in Nursing with high distinction.
  • Melissa Bocconcelli, the student commencement speaker, graduated with three Associate degrees.
  • The Commencement speaker David Rousseau, President of Salt River Project (SRP), exemplified the success of the West Valley and the potential of local graduates.

AJS Club Assists With 2013 Commencement

EMCC's Administration of Justice Studies (AJS) Club assisted with the 2013 Commencement Ceremony at the Goodyear Ballpark. The students monitored field gates, assisted with the recessional and connected medical personnel with student needs. Charles Summers (Director College Public Safety) stated, "They did a great job. I appreciate the help and participation of the AJS club." Led by Faculty Advisor Jim Cerven, the club assisted EMCC Public Safety with various events throughout the academic year.

EMCC Students Outstanding at Sudent Conference

Held at Estrella Mountain, the 2013 Student Conference "Knowledge is Power" received 70 proposals from MCCCD students at GateWay, Glendale, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Estrella Mountain. Thirty-five proposals were selected for the conference. The Poster session winners were:

  • Steven Jonas, Jeremy Jacobs (Gateway) - "Remember Me"
  • Jessica Black (Glendale) - "Pre and Post Analysis of Smoking Bans"
  • Seterah Zakikhani (Phoenix) - "Allelopathic Effects of Four Plants on Garden Seeds"

Oral Presentation winners were:

  • Ariel Cluckey, Aimee Graves, Rachel Shauger, Perla Palamino (Estrella Mountain) - "Measuring College Students Awareness on Education's Title IX"
  • Adiam Yeghin, Marc Solace, Alexander Sciury (Estrella Mountain) - "Students Views on Pro-Life Reproductive Rights"
  • Andrea Grana (Estrella Mountain) - "Shedding Light and Saving Lives"

Winners received scholarships made available through Estrella Mountain's Title V grant.

EMCC Summer Hours Begin

From May 13 to August 2, summer hours of operation are:

  • College: M-Th, 7:00am-6:00pm, closed F-Sun
  • Adjunct Faculty Suite: M-Th, 7:00am-6:00pm, closed F-Sun
  • Tutoring - LEC & NASA schedule: closed during intersession, Summer session: M-Th, 7:00am-8:00pm, closed F-Sun 
  • Library/Computer Commons: schedule
EMCC Burrowing Owls Receive Media Attention

In preparation for Estrella Mountain's Perfoming Arts Center (PAC), volunteers helped relocate burrowing owls residing in the construction area. Students built artificial habitats in a drainage area north of the PAC site using a backhoe, shovels and advice from owl experts. The owls will naturally migrate to the new area. The project received media coverage within Arizona. Read the article.
