Campus Updates - Wednesday, September 18, 2013

Wednesday, September 18, 2013

EMCC student England Wade successfully completed the Estrella Hall Grand Opening scavenger hunt and won the iPad donated by Okland Construction. During a week-long grand opening, students received stamps on a 'resource passport' by visiting campus locations and learning about the student success services offered at EMCC. Students who collected all 6 stamps could enter their completed Resource Passport into a drawing for the iPad. When notified she won the iPad, England skeptically asked, "I did? I really did?" Follow EMCC's Facebook page for more information about EMCC student events.

Hispanic Heritage Month Uses New Outdoor Space for Kickoff Event

Although the Estrella construction project predicted an increase in building usage, Estrella Conference Center and Estrella Hall's outdoor plaza are demonstrating their utility for many events. Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) activities took advantage of the amphitheatre seating and open green space. With a welcome by the Mayors of Tolleson and Avondale, the HHM kickoff continued with artistic performances, lunch and a salsa contest under the eaves of Estrella Hall's covered walkways.

HHM events are free and scheduled from September 17 to October 15. Special guest lectures October 1 and October 10 accompany a month-long agenda that includes favorite activities, like the September 25 Cesar Chavez luncheon. Read more.

Visiting Artist's Work on Display at EMCC

Jimmy Fike, EMCC Art Faculty, continues to locate and feature artists for EMCC's campus displays. Currently, Justyna Badach's Bachelor Portraits are on view in Komatke C and Estrella Hall display cases. For the series, Badach sought men who existed on the margins of society - individuals who might be considered 'invisible' in society. The images were taken in safe spaces, where the men often withdrew from the world to think. Each man's voluntary participation took several hours of collaboration, resulting in portraits that are extremely personal, emotionally intense and sometimes unsettling. The collection is on display at EMCC until October 31. Justyna Badach will be on campus for a visiting artist's lecture October 31, 1-2pm in the CTL.

2013 Learning Summit Reunion Planned

Attendees from this year's Learning Summit Team will reunite to discuss the ideas generated during the June 2013 conference. This year, several strategies were proposed addressing engagement, professional development and student success. Summit Team members are encouraged to bring a 'buddy' Wednesday, October 2 to the Plaza Gallery. Lunch is served at 11:30; the reunion starts promptly at 12:00pm.
