CAMPUS SUCCESS
EMCC Selected As Destination Stop for T4D

In support of EMCC's STEM programs, Dr. Bronwen Steele (Science Faculty) successfully confirmed EMCC as one of five destination stops for the Tour for Diversity (T4D) in Medicine. EMCC is the only stop in Arizona for students to participate in the day-long conference workshops (pre-registration is required):

  • Date: Tuesday, February 4
  • Time: 9:00am-4:00pm (checkin at 8:30am)
  • Location: Estrella Conference Center

Recent alumni, post-baccalaureate students and undergraduate students should register online for the day-long conference with lunch provided. Space is limited, with preference given to students interested in medical, dental and professional programs. T4D is a grassroots effort to educate and cultivate future minority physicians and dentists. The conference sessions focus on premedical academic achievement, the application process and other skills necessary for success in the medical and dental fields.

SPOTLIGHTS
EMCC Student's Photo Published In Vogue Italia

Orlando Pelagio, current EMCC student and new peer mentor, has a collection of photos and can now state that one is part of PhotoVogue. PhotoVogue is a showcase space for photographers with Vogue editorial staff reviewing and selecting photos for display on the publication's homepage. After several different submissions, Orlando's photo, The Time Traveler (see image), was selected and is published in his online portfolio. Orlando commented, "I cannot stop now, so I shall be patient and persistent with future submissions in hopes of similar outcomes, and hopefully a chance at something much greater."

Regifting for Scholarships

Women's History Month Planning Committee is collecting unwanted/unneeded Holiday gifts. By "regifting", donated items become gift baskets for scholarship drawings during the March 22 Women's Conference. Proceeds from the gift basket drawings go to EMCC scholarships for students. Items can be dropped off at Estrella North 262 with Dr. Olga Tsoudis.

ACROSS THE CAMPUS
Development of EMCC Leadership Academy Assisted By CTL

Stemming from the Learning Summit Team, the EMCC Leadership Academy is under development. The Leadership Academy is a direct response to the ideas generated during the June 2013 Summit, the EMCC Team Reunion (October 2, 2013), employee feedback during many Fall 2013 Learning College Campus Conversations and the recent Core Values Day. Newly hired CTL learning facilitator, Shalonda Witmore, is developing and will pilot workshops requested by employees for possible inclusion in the Leadership Academy. Individuals who would like to participate on the team developing the Leadership Academy should contact Laura Fry by January 31, 2014.

25Live Reservation/Calendar System Launched

EMCC's Events Calendar transitioned to the new, district-wide reservation system/calendar. A web-based system, 25Live works best with the Firefox web browser (Google Chrome and Safari are compatible; Internet Explorer is not recommended.) Individuals who would like one-on-one instruction for using the system can attend the open lab: Wednesday, January 15, 2:00-3:00pm, Library Instruction Room. Questions or issues with the system can be sent via email. Online Instructional Guides are available containing information about using the system and submitting requests.

BEST PRACTICES
CTL Connects Employee Development to Larger Vision

Often used to symbolize strength and sustainability, the metaphoric tree is inspiration for the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and the picture (see image) foreshadowing what may come to be. Under the direction of Dr. Bill Farrar, the CTL is envisioned as the hub for EMCC's Learning College. From recent outreach efforts, the CTL has tailored workshops to meet employee needs, creating both online and in-person learning opportunities. In addition to the CTL calendar of events, all employees can access:

  • Employee Book "Club": The Anatomy of Peace, which explores people's justifications for not doing the 'right thing', will be the first book discussed during Spring 2014. Copies are available for checkout at the library.
  • SIS videos: Working with Frank Amparo, 60-second videos were created to assist employees with navigating through the Student Information System.
  • Equipment: Audio and video equipment (with video best practices) and clickers are available for checkout.

Among the many projects undertaken, the CTL team focuses on connecting all employees to useful content. The CTL continues to provide resources for employees and create connections across campus, including:

  • CTL calendar: offered in several formats - printed by date, printed by category interest, and online.
  • CTL hangout: an 'informal learning' space and can be used for meetings.
  • 5-minutes of fame: Annual end-of-year event highlights innovation at EMCC; employees submit their completed ideas for recognition. Scheduled for May 1, 2014.

Conversation Starters Boosts "I Will Graduate" Campaign

Piloted during the Spring 2013 Student Success Fair, the "I Will Graduate" campaign became a successful tool for engaging and encouraging students to think about completion goals. Employees can use monthly conversation starters to facilitate a dialogue with students. January conversation starters are:

  • How was your break? Are you ready for the Spring semester?
  • What classes are you taking this semester? Do you know where they are located?
  • Have you declared a major? When will you be graduating or completing your certificate?

Each month, new conversation starters will be published. The questions are based on the academic calendar and the student experience. By engaging with students, we increase their potential for success.
