Black History Month Events Feature Variety of Activities

In honor of Black History Month, the "Civil Rights in America" exhibit is on display in the KOM A art case (across from HR office). Stephen Marc's photography weaves more than 500 years of African American life together, creating a digital montage of U.S. history and the black experience. Stephen will be on campus Thursday, February 6, 11:30am - 2:00pm in the CTL to discuss his art.

Games and scenarios are incorporated into Money Management Workshops to inspire student discussions about budgeting and wise money management. EMCC's Business Institute & Entrepreneur Club, Black History Month Committee & Black Student Union partnered with the Center for Teaching and Learning to offer 6 workshops with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.:

  • The Stock Market: Risks and Rewards
  • Investments
  • Balancing Your Checking Account
  • Flip a Coin
  • Paycheck
  • Loan Amount

All workshops are in the CTL, Thursday, February 13, 3:00-5:00pm. If students sign up by Friday, February 7, they are guaranteed a free "food box". Call the Business Institute for more info: 623.935.8442

Encouraging Students with Academic Achievement Opportunities

EMCC's Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society and EMCC's Honors Program are currently recruiting students to participate in their respective programs.

  • The Honors Program is seeking students eligible for an Honors Award Scholarship.
  • PTK has sent invitations to students who are eligible for membership.

Refer students to Marylyn Bradley (PTK faculty advisor) and Alex Andrews (Honors Program Director) or the programs' websites for eligibility requirements and additional information. Encourage students who meet the membership/award parameters to participate...student engagement contributes to student completion!

Spring 2014 Refugee Hygiene Drive Spearheaded by Adjunct Faculty

Bins in the Montezuma Adjunct Faculty Office (MON 119) are set up to collect hygiene and household items for refugees. The donation drive is incorporated into classroom civic responsibility and global engagement. During the Fall 2013 semester, adjunct faculty and EMCC's Phi THeta Kappa Chapter were largely responsible for generating awareness. Of the 1000 items collected, 90% were student based.
