CAMPUS SUCCESS
Student Success Fair Sets Goals for Students and Employees

The Student Success Fair, piloted last year, exceeded expectations and this year's event was larger due to employee participation and engagement. EMCC's Student Success Fair co-locates and integrates student services with academic domains, creating an engaging learning activity in an informal, low-risk setting. As students interact with employees in the different learning zones, they earn ‘stamps’ in their passport and can complete tasks to earn additional prizes and food. The 2-day event connects students to college resources and helps them commit to an individualized graduation date.

The 2014 Fair added components to the existing structure:

  • Passport stamp tables - helped alleviate congestion at the final destination and enabled more employees to interact with students.
  • Online employee training - ensured all employees were able to participate in the training and helped with consistent messaging to students.
  • Photo booth - Props (thank you Diane Stonebrink) were available for student pictures.
  • Social media - Hashtag (#iwillemcc) used to promote and connect students with the event.
  • Regalia - Suggested by faculty, employees wore cap and/or gown to promote conversations about completion and graduation.

More elements are being considered for next year to continue to grow the outreach efforts. Almost 1500 students participated in the 2014 Fair, exceeding last year's participation rate (an unexpected 900+ students!) For 2014, the Fair was promoted to high schools and almost 100 high school students attended the Tuesday evening event hours; most students brought their parents and family, thus increasing the overall headcount to approximately 300 people in the evening.

A similar event will be held at the Buckeye Education Center (BEC) for current and prospective students: April 16, 2014.

All are invited to the debrief session Thursday, March 20 (1:00-2:00pm in KOM B). Lessons learned and ideas for next year will be discussed. If you would like to provide input, but cannot attend, please email suggestions and/or comments to Laura Fry.

EMCC Submits For Aspen Award

For the third consecutive time, EMCC was selected for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. Only 150 community colleges are chosen; EMCC is the only MCCCD college to be selected each time since the program began. On Wednesday, March 12, EMCC submitted the application to move forward into the second round.

The Aspen Prize, awarded every two years, is the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among America’s community colleges and recognizes institutions for exceptional student outcomes in four areas: student learning, certificate and degree completion, employment and earnings, and high levels of access and success for minority and low-income students.
