Collaboration Fosters EMCC Service Learning Project

Together, three Estrella Mountain student clubs - Future Teachers (FTC), Administration of Justice (AJS), and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) - made a positive impact within the community Saturday, March 22. The clubs joined efforts with Adopt-A-Casita Day and the New Life Center to renovate family apartments. Responsible for an assigned casita/casitas, each club raised their own funds and donations for the renovation. Club members provided household items and cleaning/painting to transform the casitas into warm, comfortable homes for the families. In a day of giving back, EMCC students and club sponsors worked side-by-side and demonstrated an EMCC core value: collaboration.

EMCC club sponsors Jim Cerven (AJS), Marylyn Bradley (PTK), Pete Turner and Rachel Holmes (FTC) were joined by Phoenix College's Kat Valdivia in the collective project. Initially an effort between EMCC FTC and Phoenix College's FTC, the 2014 project expanded to include AJS and PTK and enabled the larger group to adopt 4 casitas. "My hope is that in 2014-15, we can continue to increase that number by encouraging additional EMCC clubs to join in this effort," stated Rachel.

Conversation Starters Reinforces "I Will Graduate" Campaign

Piloted during the Spring 2013 Student Success Fair, the "I Will Graduate" campaign became a successful tool for engaging and encouraging students to think about completion goals. Employees can use IMOR2's monthly conversation starters to facilitate a dialogue with students. April conversation starters are:

  • Are you prepared for your finals?
  • Do you qualify to graduate this spring?  Have you applied for graduation, yet? (If so ...Congratulations!!)
  • If you are feeling stressed, would you like to speak with someone?

Each month, new conversation starters are published. The questions are based on the academic calendar and the student experience. By engaging with students, we increase their potential for success. Questions for March may be relevant and could still be used:
