Introduction to Education
3 Credits
Overview of education and educational institutions in our society, including current issues, responsibilities and qualifications of educators.  Opportunity for students to assess their interests in this area.
Course Note:  Requires a minimum of 30 hours of field experience in elementary or secondary classroom environment.

Introduction to the Exceptional Learner
3 credits
Overview of the exceptional learner, one who differs form the average or normal, with emphasis on factors relating to current practices, identification, characteristics and educational adaptations.  Issues related to mildly disabled, severely disabled, emotionally and behaviorally disordered, mentally retarded and gifted students.
Prerequisites: None

Cultural Diversity in Education
3 Credits
Examination of the relationship of cultural values to the formation of the child’s self-concept and learning style.  Examination of the role of prejudice, stereotyping and cultural incompatibilities in education.  Emphasis on preparing future teachers to offer an equal educational opportunity to children of all cultural groups.

Foundations of Approaches to Serving English Language Learners (ELL)
3 Credits
Rationale for and current educational and legal issues for English Language Learners (ELL). Comparison and evaluation of various types of language educational models including Structured English Immersion (SEI), English as a Second Language (ESL) and bilingual. Approved school-based practicum experience.

Children’s Literature
3 Credits
Review of folk and modern literature from a variety of world cultures, including application of literary criteria to folk and modern literature for children.

EDU292
The Art of Storytelling
3 Credits
Explore the art and origin of storytelling.  Provide a variety of storytelling techniques, styles and exercises to enhance the delivery of telling stories.  Assist in the integration and application of storytelling to the learning environment in the classroom
