Communication Studies assist students in understanding the processes and concepts that give one an advantage in today’s global and interconnected world. Classes, projects, research and internships assist students with developing their interpersonal, small group, public speaking and intercultural communication skills. Students learn how to evaluate, navigate and apply human communication processes ethically and effectively while learning to be a leader and sustain communication in organizations.
Why Communication Studies @ EMCC?
The Communication Studies program at EMCC is both process- and performance-based. Not only do students learn ABOUT communication, but they become more effective and ethical communicators. They are authentically assessed by instructors, peers and self-evaluation which create an open and safe environment for learning and expression.
COM100 students are pre-assessed at the beginning of the semester and post-assessed at the end of the semester with an attitudinal survey that measures improvement in self-perceived confidence, enjoyment, competence, and interest in communication.
- A number of Communication faculty at EMCC provide students with Service Learning and Honors Project opportunities. These are of mutual benefit to students and the various internal and external communities of EMCC.
- Communication faculty at EMCC are involved in the audition and selection process for student commencement speakers and in training, coaching, and judging student presenters in the Annual EMCC Student Conference and the end-of-semester EMCC Honors Expo.
- The Communication Studies program includes opportunities for students to belong to the Forensics Club and to participate in various collegiate speech and debate competitions.
