Degrees and Certificates

AAS Degree:

Graduates receiving an AAS in Nursing degree are eligible to apply for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).  The RN is educated as a generalist who delivers health care to clients and family groups and has competencies related to the art and science of nursing.  The RN may be employed in a variety of acute, long-term, and community-based health care settings.  Registered Nurses function withing the legal scope of practice and use professional standards of care when caring for clients and families across the life span.  The degree provides the graduate with an educational foundation for articulation into the University setting.

Certificate of Completion for Practical Nursing:

The Practical Nurse program at EMCC’s SWSC provides a holistic approach to education that combines classroom instruction with a state-of-the-art simulation laboratory, hands-on clinical experience, and therapeutic interaction with patients in off-site clinical locations throughout the Phoenix area.

Practical nurses are responsible for patients in a variety of settings and at all levels of the health-wellness continuum. Working directly under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician, practical nurses have the responsibility to provide direct patient care to patients in a variety of settings; including long-term care facilities, home health care, psychiatric care facilities, schools, and hospices. 

The responsibilities of the Practical Nurse include providing comfort, hygiene, inspection of all body systems, nutritional support, medication administration, treatment measures as ordered and within scope of practice, communication with members of the family and health care team, leadership and supervision, and patient advocacy. 

Practical Nurses function within their legal scope of practice and use professional standards of care in illness care and health promotion activities for clients and families across the life span.

Certificate of Completion for Nursing Assistant:

The Nurse Assistant program at EMCC’s SWSC provides a holistic approach to education that combines classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory and clinical experiences, and therapeutic interaction with patients in off-site clinical locations throughout the Phoenix area. Successful graduates of the program will receive a Certificate of Completion (CCL).

Nursing Assistants perform routine tasks in the general care of hospital, clinic, and nursing home patients.  They work directly under the supervision of registered and practical nurses.  Their role in performing basic patient care assists the licensed staff in providing quality nursing to the patient.

The Nursing Assistant occupation is one of a series of possible steps on a career ladder in the health care field.  Nursing Assistants are important members of a health care team.  Typical patient-care duties include bathing and dressing patients, helping with personal hygiene, taking vital signs, answering call lights, transporting patients, servicing and collecting food trays, and feeding patients.  The nursing assistant can work in a variety of settings:  acute care, long-term care, assisted living, home care, rehabilitation, and hospice.
