Assessment of Service Learning

"Giving frees us from the familiar territory of our own needs by opening our minds to the unexplained worlds occupied by the needs of others." -- Barbara Bush, First Lady

Although students learn a good deal about researching and writing papers, and, although students learn about public policy and practical politics, the most important aspect of Service Learning is student empowerment. Learning about democracy is not enough.  Service Learning requires students to participate in democracy, and they come to realize they can positively influence their communities to truly “make a difference.”

The "learning" in Service Learning occurs when the Service Learning activity or project is aligned with course topics, curriculum, and objectives.  The learning is documented through the essential element of reflective thinking.  Student journals, reflective writings, and presentations are imperative for students to connect the service experience with the course purposes.
