Types of Service Learning

"A Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in." -- Greek Proverb

Agency Placement
Students are placed individually in local agencies (schools, social agencies, government offices, service providers) to perform course-related service for a pre-determined number of hours over the semester.  Instructor is less involved in the service activities and processes.

"One Shot" or "Into the Streets"
Students (and usually the instructor) engage in a one-day service event related to course content.

Civic Engagement
Students become involved individually or collaboratively in civic processes (on and/or off campus) to enact social transformation while achieving course competencies)

Project-Based
Students (usually in groups or teams) identify a campus or local "problem" (defined as a need, task, opportunity, event, unfortunate situation, injustice, or discrepancy gap), or the instructor may select the problem.  Students engage in the problem-solving process to determine and eventually implement "solutions."  The instructor is highly-involved as facilitator and participant. Civic engagement is often inherent in the group projects.
