What is a Peer Mentor?

A Peer Mentor is a current EMCC student, employed by the college, who has taken and mastered several courses, and is now helping students in select CPD, MAT, ENG, BIO, AJS, and RDG courses.  Peer Mentors help new students navigate through the different resources and college processes and procedures that we offer.

How can I become a Peer Mentor?

New Peer Mentors are generally referred by EMCC faculty and staff to apply for a position in the middle of each semester when the call goes out from the program coordinator.  Minimum qualifications include: a) Currently enrolled EMCC student; b) Must have completed at least 12 credits at EMCC; c) Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above; c) Must be available to work approximately 10 hours per week; and, d) Must have good communication and leadership skills. How can I participate in the Peer Mentor Program?

There are 2 ways to participate:

The first is to be in a class designated with a Peer Mentor, these classes include different sections of RDG081 & RDG091, ENG081 & ENG091, MAT082 & MAT091, CPD150, AJS101, and BIO160. At this time there is no way to specifically sign up for a class with a Peer Mentor assigned to it.

If you are not in a class that has a Peer Mentor in it, then you can still participate in the Peer Mentor Program by utilizing the Drop in Office Hours. For the fall 2014 semester the hours will be:

Monday 2:30pm-4:00pm

Tuesday 2:30pm-4:00pm

Thursday 2:30pm-4:00pm
