The next All-USA Scholarship Competition will take place in early fall 2012 for those who meet eligibility criteria and will be transfering on to a senior institution of higher education effective in fall 2013. This is an annual competition. Please read on for further information.

All-USA Scholarship Competition

This fall Estrella Mountain Community College will nominate two students for the 2011 All-USA Academic Team Scholarship sponsored by the Beta Alpha XI chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society at EMCC. The scholarship pays two full years of tuition to one of our three Arizona public universities (ASU, NAU, or U of A) with money available for use in Fall 2012. An additional cash prize of up to $1000 is also awarded to each nominee.

Eligibility Criteria

You must meet the following criteria to apply:

  • Currently enrolled at EMCC for Fall 2012,
  • 3.5 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) for all course work completed in the last 5 years, regardless of institution attended,
  • Completion of 36 semester hours at the 100-level or above by the end of Fall Semester 2012 and 48 semester hours at the 100-level or above by the end of Spring Semester 2013, and
  • Plan to transfer to an accredited 4-year school for Fall 2013.

Phi Theta Kappa membership is NOT required to compete or win scholarship awards.

Interested students are encouraged to consult with Marylyn Bradley, Phi Theta Kappa Faculty Advisor, ptk@estrellamountain.edu by Sep 14, 2012, to plan their entry. Preplanning will make for a stronger entry and increase the likelihood of winning one of these two valuable scholarships for 2013.

Selection Process (Details To be Updated May 2012)

Step One: Submission of an essay on the following topic:

In 500 words or less, describe your most significant endeavor while attending community college in which you applied your academic or intellectual skills to benefit your school, community or society. The endeavor may be in community/service learning, in research, in the arts, or in advocacy/public affairs.

Essay judges will consider originality, initiative, degree of difficulty, results and benefit to society. The essay may NOT exceed two pages, typed and double-spaced. Use 12-point Arial type font.

All essays must be submitted by 5 p.m. on October 6, 2011, to Dr. Roselyn Turner in 241 Montezuma Hall, 623-935-8454. Attach a downloadable Student Cover Form to essay with paper clips (no staples, please). Do NOT include your name on or anywhere in the essay for purposes of anonymity; your name goes on the Student Cover Form only. Faculty will read and rank the essays in order to identify the top four ranked essays. These students will become scholarship semi-finalists.

Step Two: Semi-finalists will be asked to complete the full online scholarship application (including letters of recommendation and summaries of campus and community activities). A second faculty committee will select our two scholarship winners from that group. The Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Advisor will assist students in completing online scholarship applications.
