Nurse Assistant Program

With the construction of large healthcare facilities in the West Valley, coupled with an aging population at both the local and national level, trained healthcare professionals are now more in demand than ever before. Careers in healthcare, including Certified Nurse Assistants are often included on Hot 100 job listings worldwide.

Certified Nurse Assistants typically start at $9-$15 hourly, and are responsible for a variety of patient needs. They can work in hospitals, nursing homes and home health. A good candidate for this field possesses a helpful, warm, patient, and caring attitude, as the CNA usually enjoys the most patient contact throughout the day. While daily tasks and responsibilities vary depending on the facility where a CNA may be employed, all CNAs enjoy a satisfying career helping people.

The Nurse Assistant Program at the SouthWest Skill Center includes a holistic approach to education that combines classroom instruction with a skills based laboratory, hands-on practice, and therapeutic interaction with patients at off-site clinical locations throughout the Phoenix area.

Qualified graduates of the program may take the certification examination required by the state to become Certified Nurse Assistants. Remember, simply completing the courses and hour requirements does not guarantee certification.

Before acceptance and commencement of the Nurse Assistant program, students must take an assessment test (TABE). The requirement is to achieve 9th grade reading and 6th grade math. Successful candidates must complete an application, which will include Fingerprint clearance card, Healthcare provider CPR and immunizations required.

Classes are calculated according to clock hours instead of semester-based credits. The Nurse Assistant Program consists of 144 clock hours, including off-site clinical.

All courses apply as EMCC articulated credit.
