Practical Nurse Program

With the construction of large health care facilities in the West Valley, coupled with an aging population at both the local and national level, trained healthcare professionals are now more in demand than ever before. Careers in healthcare, including Licensed Practical Nurses are often included on Hot 100 job listings worldwide. The Licensed Practical Nurse is a well-respected, secure position in the medical field and a great first step toward becoming a Registered Nurse. Licensed Practical Nurses typically start between $15 - $22 hourly and are responsible for a variety of patient needs. Often working directly under an RN/Nurse Manager, Practical Nurses have a responsibility of providing quality care to their patients and assisting senior medical staff. Practical nurses work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics and nursing homes. The Practical Nurse Program at the SouthWest Skill Center includes a holistic approach to education that combines classroom instruction with a skills-based laboratory, hands-on practice and therapeutic interaction with patients at off-site clinicals located throughout the Phoenix area. The program prepares students with the competencies necessary to take the NCLEX-PN licensing examination. Completing the course and hour requirements does not guarantee certification. Classes are calculated according to clock hours instead of semester-based credits. Clock hours convert to credit hours when enrolling in a Maricopa Community College District RN Program. The Practical Nurse Program consists of 1008 clock hours and includes the following topic areas:
  • Medical Math Calculations
  • Structure and Function of the Human Body
  • Medical Terminology
  • Fundamentals of Nursing
