Dr. Rey Rivera brings more than 23 years of higher education experience to his role as president of Estrella Mountain Community College. Appointed president on July 1, 2019, Dr. Rivera’s career reflects a strong connection to the classroom, students, and faculty.
Before leading the college as President, Dr. Rivera served as EMCC’s Vice President of Learning. Prior to that, he spent 15 years as a full-time EMCC mathematics faculty member during which he served two terms as EMCC’s Faculty Senate President. As a first-generation college student, Dr. Rivera passionately supports EMCC's Learning College paradigm by supporting faculty and staff in creating the best learning environments for our students and community. Additionally, he continues to teach mathematics at EMCC as an adjunct faculty.
Dr. Rivera serves as the EMCC representative to Western Maricopa Coalition's (WESTMARC) Education and Workforce Development Team and was recently elected to the Southwest Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors. Additionally, he serves as one of the EMCC Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Tri-Chairs for Reaccreditation and is part of HLC’s Peer Reviewer Corps.
He has held several leadership positions at EMCC including Division Chairperson of Science and Mathematics, Principal Investigator for two National Science Foundation grants, and Interim Dean of Occupational Education. He was recently selected as a 2019 Aspen Presidential Fellow.
Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Rivera earned his Ed.D. in higher and post-secondary education at Arizona State University, his Master of Science degree in mathematics at Purdue University, and completed his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics at The University of Texas at Austin. In addition to his academic and professional accomplishments, Dr. Rivera is most proud of his two children: Andres 24 and Iliana 20.
