How to Participate in the Commencement Ceremony

Students wishing to participate in commencement need to complete the following:

  • Apply for graduation
  • Pay commencement fee – pay $25.00 fee to Enrollment Services
  • Complete participation card
    • Participation cards will be mailed to eligible students
    • Participation cards are due to Enrollment Services by May 9, 2019
  • ​Pick up your cap, gown, and announcement cards, while supplies last
    • Students will receive five announcements with cap and gown (while supplies last)
    • Extra announcements are $0.50 each (Extra announcements will not be available until May 7, 2019, while supplies last)
  • Late night regalia pick up available on Thursday, May 9, 2019 until 7:00 PM

Information and Frequently Asked Questions

Check-in will begin at 7:30 AM.  All graduates must be checked in before 8:30 AM, or you may not be allowed to participate in the ceremony. This area has no place for storing personal items; please leave items with family and friends. Due to limited space, only participating graduates will be allowed in check-in area. Doors open to guests 1 hr prior to the ceremony at 8:30 AM.

Students, guests, and staff will pass through metal detectors prior to entering the arena. Security teams will also use hand wands and check bags as an added measure.  Please take this under consideration in order to complete the check-in process on time.

No rehearsal prior to commencement.

The ceremony is a ticketed event.  A ticket will be required by each guest to gain entrance to the GCU Arena. Graduation participants will each receive six (6) tickets for guests. Children under 3 years old who sit on a ticketed guest's lap will not need a ticket. Children 3 and older will require a ticket. Tickets will be issued as students pick up their regalia. If you are in need of additional tickets, you will be able to place yourself on a waitlist during regalia pick-up. On Tuesday, May 7, 2019, EMCC will start contacting wait-listed students to pick up additional tickets on a first come, first serve basis.

Grand Canyon University offers free parking. For EMCC's graduation, parking is located in the 29th Avenue and Camelback structure. Shuttle services may be provided, but limited, at the 29th Avenue structure. Shuttles are anticipated to start service 30 minutes prior to the ceremony and conclude an hour after the ceremony. If able, please carpool or consider ride share services.

Only persons with a government-issued disability license plate/placard displayed on their vehicle will be permitted to park in the 33rd Avenue structure. Shuttle service is not available from the 33rd Avenue structure. 

Professional photographers will be taking pictures of all commencement participants on Friday, May 10, 2019, during the commencement ceremony. These photographs will be available for purchase from Grad Images. To complete your pre-event registration go to Grad Images

Participation in the commencement ceremony does not certify graduation or completion of a certificate.  Degree and certificate recipients who participate in the ceremony will receive only an award cover at the ceremony. Students will be notified via their Official Student Email once certificates and degrees are available for pick-up.

For qualified students who wish to receive the Maricopa Community College Veteran Stole or Dependent Cord, please attend the 2019 Veterans Convocation at 6:00p.m. on May 2 at Phoenix College Pulpitt Auditorium.

If you or one of your guests has need for an alternative print format or other accommodations, please call Pam Grady at 623-935-8935 no later than April 26, 2019.

  • The ceremony will be indoors. You will be standing and walking before and during the ceremony. Comfortable footwear is recommended.
  • The ceremony will be approximately 1.5-2 hours. Please be respectful of all of our graduates; it is expected that all attendees remain for the entire ceremony.
  • Following the ceremony, guests will be directed up the stands and outside the arena to meet their graduates. Guests will not be permitted access to the arena floor.
  • Concession stands will be open for guests.
  • Parking is free.
  • Balloons, strollers, and noise makers are prohibited inside the arena.
  • For graduates: As there is no place for storage, please do not bring personal items. Clear bags are recommended for guests.
