Lost to COVID Remembrance

COVID

Thank you for joining the EMCC community as we come together to pay tribute to those we’ve lost to COVID-19, hold space for those mourning a loss, and acknowledge those suffering through the long-term effects of COVID-19. While we are saddened that our collective loss necessitates an event like this, we know we are stronger together!

Message from Dr. Rey Rivera, EMCC President

“The last two years have been challenging.  Far too many of our loved ones have lost their lives to COVID-19 - over 29,000 lives in Arizona alone.  We have experienced a collective trauma.  Our way of life on this campus, and in general, changed.  However, we are adapting and moving toward healing.  We felt this spring would be the appropriate time to come together as a community for a collective Remembrance Day.

Our purpose is simple; we want to acknowledge the loss many of us have felt and honor those who have passed away.  We want to provide public space for those mourning a loss to connect and send hope to those suffering from the long-term effects of the COVID-19 virus.  We are grateful for your presence with us, and we encourage you to leverage the communal space and support being offered today.”

Remarkable Presence | An immersive art installation and AR experience by artist Jen Urso

COVID

As of April 2022, over 29,000 people in Arizona have died of COVID-19. They were people with family and friends, children and pets—people who mentored others and changed lives. Now, they are gone, and all of their belongings and memories are left with the people involved in their lives.

Remarkable Presence is an immersive art installation and AR experience by artist Jen Urso (see her bio below) featuring small, paper suitcases representing each COVID death in Arizona. These suitcases will be distributed throughout the community in events of collective grieving. The Remarkable Presence website (https://www.remarkablepresence.com/) serves as a hub of information, a way to experience the work virtually, and a point of contact for community members to request suitcases and make a donation to two worthy organizations.

The in-person installation is located on the first floor of Estrella Hall - South just outside the Academic Success Center across from the elevator through Thursday, April 14, 2022.

In addition to the physical presence of the suitcases, this piece includes an augmented reality (AR) experience both in the gallery space and anywhere you can access the AR app. The AR element allows virtual attendees to get a sense of the volume of loss Arizona has experienced while getting in touch with the reality of these individuals' lives.

Visit https://hoverlay.io/space/89460 to access the Augmented Reality.  You must download the Hoverlay app on your phone in order to have the AR experience.
