Learner Responsibilities

If you are enrolled in an online or hybrid course at EMCC, complete the Online & Hybrid Learning Orientation course prior to the start of your online or hybrid class.

Step 1: Join the Online & Hybrid Learning Orientation.
Step 2: Click the "Join this Course" button on the right side of the page and log-in with your MEID.
Step 3: Continue by clicking the "Go to the Course" button in the pop-up window.
Step 4: Complete the modules at your own pace within 3 days.

  • You only need to complete the orientation once. The course is valid for all your online and hybrid courses at EMCC.
  • Upon completion of the orientation course, you will receive a Canvas badge.
  • The badge will remain in your Canvas profile for 3 years.
  • You may revisit the course as many times as you want to utilize the course resources.

The recommended browsers for Canvas are:

  • Mac: Firefox and Safari
  • Windows PC: Firefox and Google Chrome (Internet Explorer is compatible with Canvas, but not preferred).

Students are responsible for being proficient with Canvas and having basic computer skills. Online learners should be able to proficiently:

  • use Microsoft Office software
  • navigate the internet
  • use online search engines
  • attach and open electronic documents
  • access and use Gmail. (All Maricopa Community College students have a Gmail account, which is to be used for education correspondence. Check your Gmail account daily.)

Students without fundamental computer skills are strongly encouraged to take CIS 105. The Computer Commons staff in Estrella Hall provide EMCC students with technical support services for online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses.

If you don't have a computer, the computers in the Computer Commons are available for your use.

To be a successful online learner, you must have access to a minimum of:

  1. a reliable computer
  2. the Internet
  3. Microsoft Office software (2010 or higher), including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Canvas, works best with:

  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Operating System.

Software Requirements

  • Windows operating system (7, Vista, XP)
  • Internet Browser: Firefox 4 or higher, Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Office 2010

Hardware Requirements

  • Pentium/AMD/Athlon processor 1.0Ghz or higher
  • 512 MB RAM - 1 Gig preferred
  • 100 MB of free disk space (to install a browser if necessary, plus additional space for other programs if applicable)
  • High-speed Internet connection
  • Printer (laser or inkjet)
  • CD-ROM (required for some courses)
  • Flash Drive

Your instructor is not the technology support staff.

Questions and problems concerning technology, computers, Canvas, software, etc. must be directed to the Information Commons in Estrella Hall: 623-935-8150.

The most successful learners actively use institutional resources, including:

  • Computer Commons (in Estrella Hall): provides technical support services.
  • Academic Success Center/Tutoring (in Estrella Hall): provides walk-in and appointment-based tutoring for many disciplines (Math, Writing, Science, Reading, Accounting, Economics, Psychology).
  • Online Tutoring (Brainfuse): Students enrolled in online and hybrid courses at EMCC are allotted 6 hours of online tutoring per semester. Online tutoring is only available to assist with coursework taken at EMCC. There is no cost for the first 6 hours.

Evaluate your learning throughout the semester. Seek assistance if any of the following occur:

  1. You are unsure of or confused about course concepts.
  2. Scores on a quiz or assignment falls below 75%.
  3. You cannot stay current with the course reading / you are falling behind with the reading.
  4. Life events interfere with your coursework.
