This program provides the first two years of a 4-year curriculum for those who wish to specialize in literary and cultural studies. The English Literature program focuses on improving your writing and communication skills for a range of audiences and contexts, focusing specifically on scholarly concepts and conventions within the field of English studies. You’ll put on your critical thinking hat to analyze literature in social, cultural, and historical contexts, as well as genres, movements, national traditions, and themes. You will learn how to develop and support textual analysis by incorporating theory, scholarly work, and personal insights.

The written word is a powerful tool. In the study of English Literature, EMCC provides you with the ability to analyze, debate and theorize novels, poems, plays and other literary works. You can also expect to be taught aspects of creative writing and how to express ideas in various literary forms. Beyond reading others’ works, you will learn to write in various forms to communicate with different types of audiences. Because English Lit students study such a wide variety of communications, jobs range include technical writers, public relations specialists, lawyers, grant writers, librarians, editors, and more!
