A special message from EMCC President, Dr. Rey Rivera

Dear Mountain Lions,

Over the last year and a half, we have faced and endured many challenges. Some groups, including Native American communities, have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic so it is especially appropriate to kick off Native American Heritage Month grounded on the endurance and resilience of Native People. With that in mind, I would like to acknowledge the traditional Indigenous inhabitants of the land we occupy in Maricopa County. The Ak-Chin, Gila River, Salt River Pima-Maricopa, and the Tohono O’odham Nation all have a footprint within our county.

EMCC is committed to honoring and celebrating the Indigenous Peoples of this land. And to raise awareness of issues, past and present, affecting this community.

We are proud of the support and programs we offer our Native American students at EMCC and across the District.

We are committed to doing more and better in the future, and we welcome your feedback on our efforts and suggestions for future initiatives.

Join us as we pay tribute to our Native American brothers and sisters with this month’s programming. There are many events to choose from, and many are open to the entire community, so please invite your family and friends to join us as well. The schedule is attached.

Thank you, and Happy Native American Heritage Month, EMCC!

Dr. Rey Rivera
