Are you thinking about going to college, or going back to college, but don’t know where to start? Then head over to Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) for “Next Stop, College: Your Keys to EMCC!” The outreach event, set for 5 to 7 p.m. on June 18 in the Center for Teaching and Learning in Montezuma Hall, will kick off with a campus tour, followed by a presentation and Q&A. After the Q&A, future Mountain Lions can receive support with admissions and first-semester scheduling, and be ready to start, or restart, their educational journey this fall!

“If you’re the first person in your family to go to college and you don’t have anyone to guide you through the enrollment and registration process, then this event is for you,” said Jennifer Armour, Director of Outreach and Recruitment. “If you’ve been told ‘college isn’t for you,’ but you know it is or you think it could be, then this event is for you. If you’ve taken some college classes, but it’s been years and you’re anxious about how much has changed, then this event is for you.”

Armour wants people to know that Estrella Mountain Community College isn’t your grandparents’ community college. It’s so much more! At EMCC, you can conduct undergraduate research. You can participate in paid internships. When you graduate from EMCC, you can transfer your credits to one of our many university partners or jump right into the job market. You can also get help with your resume, job searching, and interview preparation.

As an EMCC Mountain Lion, you can get a discounted bus ticket, food from our student pantry, and possibly even qualify for childcare assistance. You have access to free tutoring and career coaching, and you can even borrow a laptop computer for the semester. If you’re a veteran, military member, or dependent, then you can utilize Veterans Services to access your VA education benefits, military tuition assistance, or MyCAA program for military spouses. They can also assist with exploring degree options, registering for classes, or connection to resources.

“At EMCC, we treat our students very holistically,” Armour said. “A student is more than just a person taking a class. They might have things going on in their lives that are causing them to really struggle in school. So we want them to know that we have the resources to try to help them overcome any roadblock they may be facing so they not only stay in the school, but also thrive in school.”

If you are planning on enrolling at the event, you must bring a physical photo ID. No electronic IDs will be accepted. Estrella Mountain Community College is at 3000 N. Dysart Road, Avondale. Montezuma Hall is on the east side of campus. Park in Lot B. “Next Stop, College: Your Keys to EMCC” will also take place on July 9 and August 12.
