Application Process

If you are a student with a disability (any mental or physical condition that causes a substantial limitation/challenge to a major life activity such as learning, communicating, reading, etc.) you may be eligible for accommodations with the DRS office and wish to apply for services. A student wishing to apply for services with EMCC DRS must:

  • be successfully admitted to EMCC in an EMCC program,

  • complete a New Student Application in DRS Connect,

  • provide EMCC DRS with the necessary documentation verifying the nature and extent of the disability, and

  • engage in an interactive process with the DRS office.

Apply early!  The DRS office will reply within one week of receiving the application with next steps which can include an invitation to meet with DRS staff. Applications without documentation can delay the process.  Accommodations are not retroactive. Once approved they apply moving forward.  With each new class/semester, students must log into DRS Connect to request their instructors be sent a faculty notification letter of their approved accommodations.

Documentation and Accommodation Eligibility Determination

Only EMCC DRS is responsible for evaluating documentation and determining accommodation eligibility for an EMCC program or service.  This is accomplished through an individualized case-by-case process directly with the student.  Documentation needs to be complete, include personally identifiable information such as a name and birthdate, and meet MCCCD documentation requirements.  Documentation can be submitted through upload in the DRS Connect new student application process, by bringing it into the office for scanning, or by emailing to [email protected]. Helpful information may include:

  • Medical records
  • Psychoeducational test reports
  • School records

While IEPs and 504 Plans can be submitted as types of documentation, EMCC is a college providing postsecondary education and therefore does not directly implement the services within IEPs and high school 504 Plans. Please review Students with Disabilities: Preparing for Postsecondary Education and Individualized Assessments for Students with Disabilities in Postsecondary Education for more information.
