Determining Financial Need & COA
Each year standard student budgets are developed based on institutional costs and
estimated costs of living, referred to as a student’s Cost of Attendance. The Cost of
Attendance or a student’s budget is determined by many factors including enrollment
status, residency status, and etc. By comparing the Cost of Attendance to the student’s
Student Aid Index (SAI), the Financial Aid Office is able to assess student need.
- The amount of financial aid that you receive as a student cannot exceed Estrella
Mountain Community College's Cost of Attendance - Financial Need is determined by your Cost of Attendance (COA) minus your
Student Aid Index. - COA - SAI = Financial Need
- The budgets reflect typical expense patterns for EMCC students. Some students will spend more than the standard amounts, while others will spend less, depending on individual circumstances. Eligibility for financial aid is based on the standard budget allowances.

These figures represent the costs for the Fall and Spring semesters for students registered in half-time to full time enrollment. Budgets costs are for a 9-month academic year, which includes a 16-week Fall Semester and a 16-Week Spring Semester. Single semester budgets are based on 5 months, which includes either a 16-week Fall, or 16-week Spring Semester. Students who are enrolled in modular courses in the Fall and/or Spring semester will receive a prorated budget (modular courses are courses in which the beginning and end dates do not span the entire 16-week semester). Budgets in the Summer will be prorated based on the actual weeks of instruction that a student is in class.
If you have documented expenses beyond those incorporated into the cost of attendance (COA), you may contact our office at finaid@estrellamountain.edu
